It's important to learn about the world's inequities and to be a voice for the voiceless any way we can. But in an age of hashtag and armchair activism, merely raising awareness about injustice is not enough. Michelle Warren knows what is needed. She and her family have chosen to live in communities where they are "proximate to the pain of the poor." This makes all the difference in facing and overcoming injustice. *Michelle Ferrigno Warren is the advocacy and policy engagement director for the Christian Community Development Association. She is an immigration, education, and human service policy specialist and is an adjunct faculty member at Denver Seminary. With over twenty years experience working in Christian community development, Michelle is a part of the national Evangelical Immigration Table and helps consult for the National Immigration Forum. She is a founding staff member of Open Door Ministries, a large community development corporation. Michelle, her husband, David, and their three children live in an immigrant neighborhood in Denver, Colorado.

Episode 50 of the Brew Theology Podcast features Dr. Tink Tinker, Ph.D. (wazhazhe/Osage Nation)
Baldridge Professor of American Indian Cultures and Religious Traditions - Iliff School of Theology. After this episode, I encourage you to sit down with some friends and talk about the following quesitons (in a pub would be nice!). What is the difference Tinker posits between worldview and ideology? How then would each of these impact the development of language in a socio-political whole? Are people really able to choose their worldview? Or are they really only choosing between ideologies (without demeaning the importance of this later)? How big is the range of “difference” within what Tinker identifies as the euro-christian worldview? Is it possible for two disparate worldviews to find an amicable balance within any given socio-political whole? Have we not often enough found it difficult enough for differing ideologies to live side by side? Say marxism and euro-christian, democratic capitalism? If the choice is between an up-down hierarchical schema of reality and the collateral-egalitarian model Tinker identifies as the traditional Native model, what might be the benefits of each? The benefits of the colonialist model for Native communities? The benefits of the egalitarian model for White settler folk? How does one determine “truth” when it comes to determining whose worldview ought to dominate a socio-political whole? Finally, what then is God?

Part 2... Go to a pub, and take a look around the room. Take it in. What do you see? Do you see the young professional so saturated in fear and worry that they are terrified of being found out as a fraud just like their mind has always said they were? Can you spot the functional alcoholic so desperate for relief from the weight of hopelessness and depression that they are deciding if this is the night that they end it all? What about the social outcast trying to interact with a group of acquaintances and missing every social cue getting eye-rolls and hushed comments about how odd they are?
Though you may not notice any obvious tells, the reality is that they, and many others, are there struggling with their own mental health conditions. Mental Health America (MHA) reports that 1 in 5 adults in America have a mental health condition, over 40 million people. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that number rises to over 300 million people worldwide. In addition, over half of those Americans with conditions have not received treatment.
