Episode 47: Mental Health - The Elephant In Every Room - Pt. 1

August 14, 2017

Go to a pub, and take a look around the room. Take it in. What do you see? Do you see the young professional so saturated in fear and worry that they are terrified of being found out as a fraud just like their mind has always said they were?  Can you spot the functional alcoholic so desperate for relief from the weight of hopelessness and depression that they are deciding if this is the night that they end it all? What about the social outcast trying to interact with a group of acquaintances and missing every social cue getting eye-rolls and hushed comments about how odd they are?

Though you may not notice any obvious tells, the reality is that they, and many others, are there struggling with their own mental health conditions. Mental Health America (MHA) reports that 1 in 5 adults in America have a mental health condition, over 40 million people. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that number rises to over 300 million people worldwide. In addition, over half of those Americans with conditions have not received treatment. On Episode 47 of the Brew Theology Podcast, Shane, Janel, Baird, Christina & Jeff brew up the relevant topic: Mental Health (Part 1)!
